Is your fuse box tripping constantly? We explain when a fuse box can be repaired and when it needs full replacement, with Blackpool pricing.
Can My Fuse Box Be Repaired?
In some cases, yes. If you have a modern consumer unit (under 15 years old) and a single breaker keeps tripping, the breaker itself may be faulty and can be replaced for £25–£45. If the RCD is tripping, it could be a faulty RCD (£60–£90 to replace) or an underlying circuit fault. However, if your fuse box has rewirable fuses, is made of plastic (pre-2016), or has multiple issues, repair is rarely cost-effective compared to replacement.
When Does a Fuse Box Need Replacing?
You should replace your consumer unit if: it has rewirable fuses (pre-1960s), it's made of plastic (doesn't meet 18th Edition fire containment rules), it has no RCD protection, it's over 20 years old, it has scorch marks or burning smells, it can't accommodate new circuits, or an EICR has recommended replacement. A new consumer unit with RCD protection is the safest option and is required for any major electrical work under Part P.
Fuse Box Repair Costs in Blackpool
Minor fuse box repairs in Blackpool cost £80–£150. This includes diagnosing the fault, replacing a faulty breaker or RCD, and testing. If the fault is on a circuit (not the fuse box itself), circuit fault finding costs £120–£200. These prices include the call-out, labour, parts and testing. We always provide a fixed quote before starting work, so you know exactly what you're paying.
Fuse Box Replacement Costs in Blackpool
A full consumer unit replacement costs £350–£650 as detailed in our separate guide. The decision between repair and replacement often comes down to age: if your unit is over 15 years old, replacement is usually the better long-term investment. A new unit will last 20+ years, includes modern safety features, and makes future electrical work easier and cheaper.
Why Is My Fuse Box Tripping?
Fuse boxes trip for several reasons. Overloaded circuits (too many appliances on one circuit) cause MCBs to trip. Earth faults (damaged appliance or wiring) cause RCDs to trip. Neutral-earth faults are common in older properties. Nuisance tripping can be caused by cumulative leakage from multiple appliances. Our fault-finding service diagnoses the exact cause and fixes it properly, not just resets the breaker.
