Your consumer unit — commonly called the fuse box — is the heart of your home's electrical system. If yours is over 25 years old, uses old-style rewirable fuses, or lacks RCD protection, it's time for an upgrade. ESI Electrical installs modern consumer units across Blackpool and Lancashire, improving safety and bringing your property up to current regulations.
Modern consumer units with RCD (Residual Current Device) protection can detect dangerous faults and cut the power in milliseconds — potentially saving lives. Old fuse boards with rewirable fuses offer no such protection. Since 2016, all new consumer units in domestic properties must be housed in non-combustible enclosures. If your board is old, plastic and unprotected, an upgrade is strongly recommended.
We supply and install a new metal-clad consumer unit with the appropriate number of ways for your property, fitted with RCDs or RCBOs on all circuits. We test every circuit before and after installation, issue a Minor Works or Electrical Installation Certificate, and notify building control on your behalf. The whole job typically takes 4–6 hours with minimal disruption.
Since April 2021, all private rental properties in England must have a valid EICR. Many older properties fail due to inadequate consumer units. We work with landlords across Blackpool and Lancashire to upgrade fuse boards and issue the required certificates, keeping properties compliant and tenants safe.
Consumer unit upgrades typically start from around £350–£550 depending on the size of your property and the specification of the unit. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote before any work begins.

“Ethan has done a great job. He's fitted a new light and extractor fan in a new wet room. Quick work and no mess. We would highly recommend him for any electrical work. 5*”
