Earthing and bonding are fundamental safety features of any electrical installation. Earthing provides a safe path for fault current to flow, causing the protective device (fuse or MCB) to operate and disconnect the supply. Bonding connects metallic parts of the installation together to prevent dangerous voltage differences. ESI Electrical installs and tests earthing and bonding across Blackpool and Lancashire.
Main protective bonding connects the incoming metallic services — gas pipes, water pipes and any other metallic services entering the property — to the main earthing terminal at the consumer unit. This ensures that if a fault occurs, all metallic services remain at the same potential, preventing dangerous voltage differences that could cause electric shock. Many older properties in Blackpool lack adequate main bonding, which is identified as a C2 code on an EICR.
Supplementary bonding in bathrooms connects all exposed metalwork — bath, shower tray, taps, pipes and any other metallic parts — together and to earth. This is required in bathrooms where the main bonding alone may not provide adequate protection. The 17th Edition Wiring Regulations relaxed the requirements for supplementary bonding in bathrooms where all circuits are RCD-protected, but it remains required in many older installations.
The type of earthing system in your property depends on how the electricity network is configured in your area. The most common types in Blackpool are TN-S (separate neutral and earth conductors) and TN-C-S (combined neutral and earth, also known as PME). We test the earthing system as part of every EICR and can upgrade or repair earthing arrangements where required.
An EICR will identify any earthing or bonding deficiencies. Common signs of inadequate bonding include a C2 code on an EICR, or visible metallic pipes near the consumer unit without a bonding clamp and green/yellow cable attached.

“Ethan has done a great job. He's fitted a new light and extractor fan in a new wet room. Quick work and no mess. We would highly recommend him for any electrical work. 5*”
