RCDs (Residual Current Devices) are the most important safety devices in your electrical installation — they can detect a dangerous fault and cut the power in as little as 30 milliseconds, potentially saving your life. But RCDs can fail silently, appearing to work normally while providing no protection. Regular testing is essential to confirm they're functioning correctly. ESI Electrical carries out RCD testing across Blackpool and Lancashire.
An RCD that fails to operate in a fault condition provides no protection against electric shock or fire. RCDs can fail due to age, mechanical wear, moisture ingress or manufacturing defects — and they often fail silently, with no visible indication that they're not working. The only way to confirm an RCD is functioning correctly is to test it with calibrated test equipment. We test RCDs as part of every EICR and can carry out standalone RCD testing for landlords and businesses.
RCD testing involves two stages: a functional test (pressing the test button to confirm the RCD trips) and an instrument test using a calibrated RCD tester. The instrument test measures the actual trip time and trip current of the RCD, confirming it meets the required performance standards. A functional test alone is not sufficient — an RCD can pass the button test while failing the instrument test. We carry out both tests and record the results.
Landlords and businesses in Blackpool and Lancashire should have their RCDs tested regularly as part of their electrical maintenance programme. We include RCD testing in our landlord maintenance contracts and can carry out standalone RCD testing visits for properties that need a quick compliance check between full EICRs.
The IET recommends pressing the test button monthly to confirm basic operation. A full instrument test should be carried out at least every 6 months for commercial premises and annually for domestic properties, or as part of the periodic EICR.

“Ethan has done a great job. He's fitted a new light and extractor fan in a new wet room. Quick work and no mess. We would highly recommend him for any electrical work. 5*”
