Voltage surges — sudden spikes in electrical voltage — can damage or destroy sensitive electronic equipment including TVs, computers, smart home devices and kitchen appliances. A whole-home surge protection device (SPD) installed at your consumer unit provides comprehensive protection for everything connected to your electrical installation. ESI Electrical installs surge protection across Blackpool and Lancashire.
Voltage surges can be caused by lightning strikes (even indirect ones nearby), switching of large electrical loads on the network, faults on the electricity distribution network, or switching of large appliances within your own property. Blackpool's coastal location means the area can be particularly susceptible to lightning-related surges during storms. A whole-home SPD protects against all these sources.
There are different types of SPDs for different levels of protection. Type 1 SPDs protect against direct lightning strikes and are installed at the main incoming supply. Type 2 SPDs protect against indirect surges and are installed at the consumer unit — this is the most common type for domestic properties. We install Type 2 SPDs as standard, and can install Type 1 where required for higher-risk locations.
The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018) introduced new requirements for surge protection. For new installations and significant alterations, a risk assessment must be carried out to determine whether surge protection is required. In many cases — particularly where the cost of equipment at risk exceeds the cost of the SPD — surge protection is now effectively mandatory. We carry out the risk assessment and install the appropriate SPD as part of any new installation or consumer unit upgrade.
The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations require a risk assessment for surge protection on all new installations. Given the cost of modern electronics and smart home equipment, surge protection is a worthwhile investment for most Blackpool homeowners.
