Planning a full house rewire in Blackpool? Here is exactly what happens from the initial survey to the final EICR certificate, so you know what to expect every step of the way.
Step 1: The Free Survey
Every rewire starts with a free survey. We visit your property, assess the existing wiring, identify any immediate hazards and discuss your requirements. We check the consumer unit, look at the wiring in accessible areas, count the circuits and assess the cable routes. This takes around 45–60 minutes for a typical 3-bedroom property. We then provide a detailed, fixed-price quote within 24 hours.
Step 2: Preparation and Planning
Once you accept the quote, we agree a start date and discuss logistics. For a full rewire, the property needs to be vacated — we recommend staying with family or in temporary accommodation for the duration. We ask you to clear furniture away from walls and remove pictures and mirrors. We protect floors with dust sheets and use cable management to keep the work area as tidy as possible throughout.
Step 3: First Fix — Cabling
The first fix involves installing all the new cabling before plastering. We chase channels into walls for cables, drill through joists and ceilings, and run all the new twin and earth cabling to every socket, switch and light fitting position. This is the most disruptive phase — there will be dust and the property will be without power for most of each day. We work systematically room by room and restore power each evening.
Step 4: Consumer Unit Installation
Once all cabling is in place, we install the new metal consumer unit. This is a critical part of the rewire — the consumer unit is the heart of your electrical installation. We fit a modern unit with individual RCBOs for each circuit, providing maximum protection. The consumer unit is installed in a suitable location, typically where the old fuse board was, and connected to the incoming supply.
Step 5: Second Fix — Accessories
After plastering and making good (which you arrange with your decorator), we return for the second fix. This involves fitting all the sockets, switches, light fittings and other accessories. We connect all the cables we installed in the first fix and test each circuit as we go. The second fix typically takes 1–2 days for a 3-bedroom property.
Step 6: Testing and Certification
The final stage is comprehensive testing of the entire installation. We test every circuit for continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and RCD functionality. This takes 2–4 hours for a typical property. Once all tests pass, we issue a Part P Building Regulations compliance certificate and an EICR certificate confirming the installation is satisfactory. You receive both certificates digitally within 24 hours.
