Partial Rewire vs Full Rewire: Which Does Your Blackpool Home Need?

Not sure whether your Blackpool home needs a full rewire or just a partial one? We explain the difference, the costs, and how an EICR helps you decide.

What is a Full Rewire?

A full rewire involves replacing every single cable in your property — from the consumer unit to every socket, switch and light fitting. All old cabling is removed and replaced with new twin and earth cable. A new metal consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection is installed. The entire installation is tested and certified. A full rewire is the most comprehensive solution and is required when the existing wiring is beyond repair or poses a serious safety risk.

What is a Partial Rewire?

A partial rewire targets specific circuits or areas of the property that have failed an EICR or are known to be unsafe. For example, you might rewire just the upstairs circuits, the kitchen ring, or the lighting circuits throughout the property. The rest of the installation remains in place. A partial rewire is cheaper and less disruptive than a full rewire, but it is only appropriate when the remaining circuits are in good condition.

How an EICR Helps You Decide

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is the definitive way to determine whether you need a full or partial rewire. The EICR tests every circuit individually and assigns codes to any defects found. If multiple circuits have C1 or C2 codes, a full rewire is usually more cost-effective than repairing each circuit individually. If only one or two circuits have issues, a partial rewire may be sufficient. We always carry out an EICR before recommending a rewire.

Signs You Need a Full Rewire in Blackpool

You almost certainly need a full rewire if your property has original rubber-insulated or fabric cabling, round-pin sockets, a fuse board with rewirable fuses, no earth wires on lighting circuits, or if the property was built before 1970 and has never been rewired. Many Blackpool Victorian terraces and post-war semis fall into this category. An EICR will confirm the extent of the work needed.

When a Partial Rewire is Sufficient

A partial rewire may be sufficient if your EICR identifies faults on specific circuits only, if the majority of your wiring is in good condition, or if you have had a recent consumer unit upgrade. Common partial rewire scenarios include rewiring a kitchen after a renovation, rewiring an extension or loft conversion, or replacing a specific circuit that has failed its EICR. We always assess whether a partial rewire will achieve a satisfactory EICR before recommending it.
